Marriage & Relationship counselling

Couple counselling is at the heart of my work, providing an accepting environment to communicate and find solutions.  Whether it’s between a married couple, long term partners; LGBTQIA+ couples; family members such as relationships with elderly parents; teenage children and parents; friends; colleagues or your boss - relationships require compromise, understanding and hard work.

  • Establishing the therapy session as a safe context of tolerance and trust for everyone
  • Whether it’s conflict in the workplace or relationship problems, we look at creating new objectives and ways of interacting with each another
  • Creating a plan of action and a space for safe, open communication to achieve the relationship goals while enhancing the well-being of each individual
  • Premarital counselling - laying a solid foundation for your future together
  • Our parents are products of their own life experiences and may not always be the best role models of a healthy relationship (we look at how those behavioural patterns are brought into our own marriages)
  • Unrealistic expectations of each other
  • Finding new ways of connecting and communicating with each other beyond the initial feelings of romance
  • Learning to trust each other with physical and emotional intimacy
  • Healing childhood wounds which may reappear in the intimacy of a relationship
  • Learning how to appreciate each other and acknowledge your own self-worth
  • Working on topics such as communication, conflict, family planning, infidelity, intimacy, finances and much, much more.

We can guarantee you that we will be there every step of your journey and will support, guide and facilitate the process with the aim of healing both of you as individuals and the relationship as a whole.

Trauma counselling

Trauma is a very personal and individual experience.  While incidents such as rape or hijacking are part of trauma, this counselling deals with any experience which has affected you deeply. When it comes to your response, there is no experience which is too big or too small; no right or wrong, good or bad.  It’s part of the beauty but also the complexity and challenges of the human condition.  In our counselling sessions we will create a safe, supportive space for you to discuss your situation and trauma.

Trauma counselling can be challenging but the rewards of integrating your experiences and feeling whole as a result of the counselling are hugely empowering.

Reaching out can sometimes be the most difficult step.  Remember that support is here for you.  Most importantly, we all have the capacity to heal from our struggles and wounds.

Counselling for Children and Teenagers

Meraki Counselling is passionate about teenagers. Therapy can support your teen through a variety of situations and challenges in this phase of life.

Teenagers go through many new challenges regarding independence, making decisions about the future, self-discovery, stress, sexuality or mental health issues. Therapy can also be used to prevent minor issues from turning into problems later on.

There are a number of factors including physical changes, sexual changes, interpersonal changes, morals, values, religious beliefs, moving to independence, self-esteem and future concerns that we focus on supporting teenagers through.

If your teenager is going through one of the following and asks about counselling, book an appointment.

• Anxiety
• Depression
• Grief & loss
• Self-esteem
• Relationship problems
• Conflict and bullying
• Self-harm
• Suicidal thoughts
• Loneliness
• Social challenges
• Health issues causing stress

We use talk therapy as well as art counselling methods (on request) with teenagers

Play Therapy, child and tween counselling

Play therapy is a form of counselling for children who are confronted with social, emotional or behavioural challenges. Children struggle to express their feelings and experiences as they don’t have the same vocabulary, understanding and maturity than that of adults. They are, however, able to express themselves through the language that they know best… play.

  • Emotional outbursts
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Bullying
  • Peer problems & conflict
  • Stress
  • Challenging behaviour
  • Tantrums
  • Attention difficulties
  • Self-esteem problems
  • Loss & bereavement
  • Trauma

Children can also go for play therapy to prepare a child for any kind of hospitalization, a funeral or any other event or experience that might have an impact on their emotional wellbeing.
